An Embrace of Peace: My Meeting with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala

There are moments that seem to collapse time into a single breath, moments where everything aligns—spirit, mission, and presence. One such moment unfolded during my recent pilgrimage to Dharamshala, where I had the honor of meeting His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

As I stepped into the sacred space of his residence, nestled in the hills that echo the prayers of exiles and seekers, I felt the quiet hum of a higher frequency—a peace that surpasses words. Then, as we stood face to face, His Holiness placed his forehead gently on mine. In that instant, the world softened. Time paused. I could feel the warmth of his smile not only on his lips, but in his eyes, and through the hands that he tenderly held in mine. We bowed together—an eternal gesture of mutual respect and shared intention.

And then, with the simple elegance that only true sages possess, he offered a letter of support to the 10 Billion Happy by 2050 initiative, an audacious vision we are advancing through the World Happiness Foundation.

**“Dear Luis, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is pleased to support your initiative, 10 Billion Happy by 2050, a global movement dedicated to cultivating happiness, compassion, and the welfare of all beings. His Holiness regularly observes that we all want to be happy and none of us wants to suffer. Since he firmly believes in the oneness of humanity, it is clearly in our common interest to promote friendship among our human brothers and sisters and harmony among all religions. Because violence only begets more violence, we must also make concerted efforts to resolve problems and disputes through dialogue and peaceful negotiation. His Holiness sends his prayers and good wishes to you and your colleagues.”

As I read his words, gratitude flowed through me like a river finding its source. I thought back to 1995, when I first embarked on my studies in Peace and Conflict Resolution. Even then, my deepest yearning was to find pathways to harmony—first within, and then in the world. That yearning has since evolved into action, into a life dedicated to cultivating the inner conditions that make outer peace possible.

To receive this blessing from His Holiness is more than an endorsement—it is a sacred transmission. A reminder that the dream of 10 Billion Happy is not naïve, but necessary. It is not mine alone, but ours to carry together. That happiness—deep, conscious, inclusive—is a birthright of all sentient beings.

The forehead touch. The letter. The gaze. The bow. These are now etched not only in my memory, but in my soul. They are fuel for the journey ahead, a journey I now walk with even greater resolve, to help realize a world of freedom, consciousness, and happiness for all.

May this moment remind us that peace is not passive. It is a practice. That happiness is not a fleeting feeling. It is a way of being. And that together, guided by love and wisdom, we can bring light to every corner of this shared Earth.
