The journey of consciousness from its unconscious state to the full realization of God, as described by Meher Baba in his seminal work God Speaks, provides a rich framework for understanding the process of awakening. It is a cosmology that mirrors the individual and collective journey toward enlightenment and peace, and it directly connects with my own vision of Fundamental Peace and the paradigm of Happytalism.
Through Ten States of God, Meher Baba describes how God, in His original, infinite state, gradually becomes conscious of Himself through the processes of creation, evolution, and realization. This journey is not merely a cosmic story; it is our story—a roadmap for how humanity can transcend the dualities of existence and find unity in consciousness. As we move through this journey, we create the conditions for a world of freedom, happiness, and peace—the essential pillars of Happytalism.
The Ten States of God: A Deeper Dive
State I: God in the Beyond-Beyond State
The first state that Meher Baba describes is the Beyond-Beyond State of God. This state is so transcendent, so unknowable, that it defies description. It is a state of absolute stillness, beyond any form of creation or consciousness. In this state, God is not aware of anything, not even of Himself. There is no time, no space, no attributes—just pure existence. This state can be understood as the primordial peace, the most original state of non-duality, where there is no concept of conflict or division because nothing else exists.
In relation to Fundamental Peace, this state represents pure potential. It is the peace that exists before any duality—before the emergence of the world, before the experience of self or other. It is a peace so complete that it requires no consciousness to sustain it. In many ways, this state symbolizes the ultimate goal of inner stillness that we, as individuals, seek to experience through spiritual practice.
State II: God in the Beyond State
The Second State of God—God in the Beyond State—is where the first stirrings of creation occur. In this state, God begins to awaken from His unconscious stillness, prompted by the infinite whim to know Himself. This whim is often described as the first cosmic question: “Who am I?”. The emergence of this question marks the beginning of all creation and existence.
In this state, God is still formless and attributeless but begins to manifest the potential for creation. While this state is still peaceful, it carries within it the seeds of duality—the potential for separation between God and creation. This mirrors the human experience: we, too, often begin our lives in a state of unawareness, and as we become more conscious of the world around us, we begin to experience duality—separation from others, from nature, and from our true selves.
For me, this state parallels the beginning of the journey toward Happytalism. It is the recognition that peace and harmony are not just individual experiences but that they are intricately tied to our understanding of ourselves and our connection to the world. The whim that drives God to ask, “Who am I?” is the same force that drives us to seek meaning, purpose, and connection. As we awaken to this deeper awareness, we begin to see the possibilities for creating a world where freedom, happiness, and peace can thrive.
State III: God as Emanator, Sustainer, and Dissolver
In the Third State, God assumes the role of Emanator, Sustainer, and Dissolver. In this state, God actively participates in the creation, preservation, and destruction of the universe. This state corresponds to the Hindu trinity of Brahma (Creator), Vishnu (Preserver), and Shiva (Destroyer), and it mirrors the cycles of birth, life, and death that we experience in the physical world.
Here, we see the emergence of duality in its full form. The world of forms, names, and attributes begins to unfold, and with it, the experience of separation. However, this separation is an illusion—an essential part of the cosmic play that allows God to experience Himself in countless forms.
For humanity, this state represents the cycles of evolution, reincarnation, and transformation that we undergo. It is in this state that we experience both conflict and resolution, pleasure and pain, joy and suffering. But through it all, the underlying reality is that God is playing all the roles—as Creator, Preserver, and Destroyer. Similarly, in the paradigm of Happytalism, we recognize that the systems and structures of the world are constantly evolving, and that by working within these cycles, we can create more just, sustainable, and peaceful societies.
State IV: God as Embodied Soul
In the Fourth State, God becomes the Embodied Soul—God incarnates as a soul that experiences evolution. This state is where consciousness begins to evolve from its unconscious state. Starting from mineral life, the soul evolves through plant, animal, and human forms. With each step in evolution, the soul gains more consciousness, more awareness of itself and the world.
This is the stage where duality is experienced most intensely. The soul, now embodied, feels separate from God and begins to accumulate impressions (sanskaras)—the karmic residues of past actions and experiences. These impressions shape the soul’s journey through countless incarnations, each one bringing it closer to the realization of its true identity as one with God.
In relation to Fundamental Peace, this state represents the human condition—our struggle to understand our place in the universe, to reconcile the experiences of joy and suffering, and to find our way back to inner peace. In Happytalism, we address this by creating educational systems, social enterprises, and community structures that help individuals on their journey of self-awareness and healing. Just as the soul evolves toward divine realization, we as a society must evolve toward systems of well-being and harmony.
State V: God as Soul in the State of Evolution
The Fifth State marks the continuation of God’s journey as an evolving soul. Here, the soul is still deeply embedded in the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, experiencing life in various forms—from mineral to animal to human. This process is driven by the accumulation of sanskaras (impressions) that tie the soul to the gross world (physical reality).
At this stage, the soul is not yet aware of its true nature. It is lost in the illusion of separateness, constantly striving for fulfillment in the external world, unaware that its true fulfillment lies within. This is where much of humanity currently resides—trapped in a cycle of material pursuits, seeking happiness in external achievements, wealth, and power.
Happytalism directly addresses this state by promoting the idea that true happiness and well-being cannot be found in external material gains alone. Instead, it is found in inner peace, self-awareness, and a deep connection to community and nature. As individuals and societies, we must evolve beyond this materialistic mindset to embrace the holistic well-being that Happytalism offers—where personal fulfillment is balanced with the well-being of others and the planet.
State VI: God as Human Soul in Reincarnation
In the Sixth State, God as the soul has now evolved into the human form, but continues to reincarnate across multiple lifetimes. In each human incarnation, the soul has the opportunity to work through its sanskaras, learning the lessons of love, compassion, forgiveness, and ultimately self-realization.
This state represents the human experience at its core: the constant cycle of birth, death, and rebirth, driven by the desire to know our true nature. It is in this state that the soul begins to actively seek liberation, questioning the purpose of life and looking for answers beyond the material world.
For me, this state reflects the inner work we must all do to achieve peace and harmony—not just for ourselves, but for the collective. Fundamental Peace emerges when individuals are able to break free from the cycles of illusion and find true contentment within. In Happytalism, we support this journey by creating systems that foster personal growth, mental health, and community support—helping people to heal their traumas, release their attachments, and find their way to inner peace.
State VII: God as Spiritually Advanced Soul
In the Seventh State, the soul reaches a state of spiritual advancement. It has evolved beyond the cycles of reincarnation and now exists in a state of conscious awareness of God, though it has not yet fully merged with the Divine. This is the state of saints, sages, and mystics who have achieved self-realization, but who still retain some connection to the world of duality.
In this state, the soul experiences bliss, love, and divine consciousness, but it is not yet fully liberated. It still has work to do in terms of integrating this divine awareness with its experience in the world. This is a state of profound peace—the kind of peace that comes from knowing the truth of oneness, but also from choosing to serve others on their journey toward the same realization.
This is where Happytalism and Fundamental Peace come together in practice. As individuals and societies, we can achieve this level of spiritual advancement by embracing the principles of interconnectedness, service, and compassion. The programs we implement in Schools of Happiness, Cities of Happiness, and Enterprises of Happiness aim to create spiritually advanced societies—where peace is not just personal, but collective, and where people live in harmony with each other and the planet.
State VIII: God as the Divinely Absorbed
The Eighth State is one of divine absorption—God as the Majzoob, fully conscious of His oneness with the Divine, but so absorbed in this awareness that He remains detached from the world. In this state, God experiences infinite bliss and infinite peace, but does not interact with creation. It is a state of pure divine consciousness, untouched by the illusions of duality or separation.
For individuals, this state represents the possibility of personal enlightenment—of achieving such a deep state of peace that all worldly concerns fall away. However, as beautiful as this state is, it is not the end of the journey. Fundamental Peace is not just about finding personal enlightenment; it is about sharing that peace with the world.
State IX: God as Liberated Incarnate Soul
In the Ninth State, God as the liberated soul becomes an active agent of divine consciousness in the world. This is the state of the Perfect Master—a soul that has not only realized its oneness with God but has also returned to the world to guide and liberate others. In this state, the soul is fully conscious of both reality and illusion and works to help others achieve the same realization.
This state represents the ultimate goal of Happytalism—to create a world where individuals not only find inner peace and happiness, but where they become catalysts for the liberation and well-being of others. Through education, community-building, and social enterprise, we can create systems of support that help people evolve into conscious catalysts of peace, just like the liberated souls in this state.
State X: God as Man-God and God-Man
Finally, the Tenth State is the state of Man-God and God-Man—the state where God is fully realized in human form. This is the state of the Avatar—a divine being who embodies the infinite power, knowledge, and bliss of God, while still remaining connected to the material world. In this state, God acts as the ultimate guide, helping humanity to evolve toward freedom, consciousness, and happiness.
For me, this state symbolizes the potential within all of us. We all have the capacity to achieve divine realization and to become agents of peace in the world. This is the ultimate goal of Fundamental Peace and Happytalism—to create a world where everyone has the opportunity to realize their true nature and contribute to the collective well-being of all.
From Personal Enlightenment to Global Awakening
Meher Baba’s Ten States of God provide a powerful framework for understanding the journey of consciousness—from unconsciousness and separation to full God-realization. This journey is not just an individual one; it is a collective journey that we must all undertake to create a world of Fundamental Peace.
Through Happytalism, we are working to create the systems and structures that support this evolution—where individuals can find inner peace, and where that peace can be shared with the world. As we move through the Ten States of God, we realize that peace, happiness, and well-being are not just ideals—they are the natural outcome of living in harmony with our true nature and with each other.
In this sense, Fundamental Peace is not the absence of conflict—it is the presence of consciousness. It is the realization that we are all one, and that by healing ourselves, we contribute to the healing of the whole. Through Happytalism, we are creating a world where freedom, consciousness, and happiness are the new measures of success, and where peace is the foundation for human flourishing.
