The Dalai Lama – Compassion as the Enabler

The Dalai Lama – we all know him and would love to learn from him. At least that’s something that all of us interested in world happiness can say.

To be genuinely compassionate, happy, and a leader who will impart this knowledge and traits onto others, you need to learn from the greatest scholars and enlightened people in the world. There is no better than the Dalai Lama at that.

We Must Strive for Happiness

The Dalai Lama says that we are here as we have a right to exist. That goes for all living creatures. Only we humans are the ones seeking happiness, but the Dalai Lama says that the purpose of every living creature, not only humans is to survive. However, according to him, surviving means living and striving for happiness.

The Dalai Lama goes as far as to say that our purpose in life is to strive for happiness. However, that doesn’t give us the right to be selfish, as every living thing deserves happiness.

His Holiness feels that we all need to strive for the good in life as that leads us to be happy and healthy. In the same way, we need to stay away from bad things like anger, as they all lead to adverse health.

As he has once said: “True happiness comes from having a sense of inner peace and contentment, which in turn must be achieved by cultivating altruism, love and compassion, and by eliminating anger, selfishness and greed.”

But what exactly is happiness? As something to which we all need to strive, we should know what happiness truly is and understand it completely.

In essence, happiness is a more profound sense of satisfaction. This deeper sense of satisfaction comes on a mental level, meaning that whatever our bodies are experiencing at the moment does not matter. All that matters is our state of mind. That’s the logic why many athletes can be happy despite the rigorous training they all go through.

Reaching Happiness Through Compassion

The Dalai Lama sees happiness as something that comes from a clear and calm state of mind. It doesn’t matter what our current physical state is – as long as we have a quiet mind, we can be happy. That will lead to better health in the end as well.

That doesn’t mean that you should take tranquilizers and go to the lake to reach a calmer state of mind. This calmness needs to be undisturbed and reached naturally. As he says: “Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your own actions.”

To achieve this, you need to be compassionate. The Dalai Lama believes that the more compassionate we are, the better our brains will be.

The entire religion of Buddhism states the same. Compassion essentially has two functions – it leads us to inner strength and causes our brain to function correctly and on a more improved level. These are consequently the causes of happiness.

The seed for compassion does not come from religion though, it comes from us, from our bodies as we were all nurtured by our mothers’ wombs and our mothers after birth. That’s why we all have compassion ingrained in our biology, and thus, we all can be happy.

Worldwide happiness is also the main objective of our World Happiness Agora that’s happening once again in March 2020. Consider joining us, and we can together lead the world towards happiness!
